Beating the System

I guess I’m a rebel.

I tend to think there’s a way to beat the system, nothing dishonest of course, but maybe a better way to approach the issue. That’s obviously not working when it comes to exercising. I’ve come to the conclusion that thinking about exercise, buying exercise equipment and watching workout videos is not the same as actually exercising. Darn!

I’ve also realized that there has to be an element of something I like about exercise in order for me to stick with any kind of plan. If you’re someone who lives to exercise and loves it…you probably can’t understand what I am saying. You talk about how good it makes you feel. Well, I’m happy for you, but I can’t relate! If you’re like me you’ve come to one equation where exercise is concerned.

Exercise = Dread
Dread = Procrastination
Procrastination = Cake2

Ahh…that must be the new math you always hear about!

But, I’m not giving up on the idea. I’ve decided to go back to what I really like to do if I have to do something…walking. Now with Wisconsin winters, that’s not as easy as it sounds. Yes, I have a walking machine at home right in front of the TV… but that’s like saying eating a hamburger is the same as your favorite filet mignon. It’s just not the same.

So I’ve headed to the mall on my lunch hour. Other than walking past the movie theatre and catching wafts of popcorn being prepared for the afternoon matinees, I think it may be what I need to do until the weather warms up. I put on a headset tuned to my favorite radio station and try to ignore the static that occurs as I go around various corners. Plus, I see other mall walkers too, and I think misery loves company.

The more I read about the importance of moving as we get older, the more I realize it’s not really about being thin. It’s about keeping everything going on the right track. At this time of life, my body is making it increasingly clear to me that my time of beating the system is pretty much over. Well, at least until the rebel in me thinks I’ve come up with some brilliant scheme!

Join me. Exercise today, take your Remifemin and tell me about your views on exercise!

    Hi Mary Ann...
    You know I read a great sense of humor in your blog, in spite of all the hard things you are going through...it's what keeps us going most days...right?
    Here's a smile for you...
    "Aerobics went from high impact to low impact. I hope next they find a way for us to do it sitting down eating and drinking a beer. But then they'll have to call it bowling!" - Diane Ford
    Hang in there Mary Ann...

    Hi Fasnashun!
    Thanks for coming to the blog! Yes,if you look up "closet" in the dictionary, it will probably say
    "see treadmill." Dancing huh? I can't honestly say I've tried that except in moments of unbridled enthusiasm which unfortunately don't happen quite often enough to be classified as any kind of consistant exercise! It brings to mind an old hit...
    "You make me feel like dancing..."
    I'll have to give it a try...Do you do everything from the Fox Trot to the Twist? What do you recommend?

    Hey Nonameme,
    Ahh....I was trying to turn that into some kind of creative, unique name when I figured out it means...
    No Name Me....got it!
    I did try Yoga, but of course, it was kind of an advanced class, and let's say I'm kind of not an advanced type exercise person! (That's being kind to myself!)
    But the stretcy bands thing I do get inspired to do every once in a while if I think about it...especially good when watching TV...so I think I'll reinvestigate that...thanks for the tips!

    Welcome to the Remifemin blog Flutterby!
    I'm so glad you blogged because if this is your first time of talking about what you need...It's about time! Talking is immensely helpful...get those feelings out. There are constructive and kind ways to do it of course, but you really need to let your voice be heard! Keep taking your Remifemin. It does take time to work, so be diligent. Also...keep up the good work with the Gazelle! It's hard work, but the rewards do come with patience and perseverance! Looking forward to hearing more about what's going on in your life.
    Take care!

    Hi Lisa!
    Welcome, glad you stopped by! Happy Birthday!!! I hope you're doing something really fun to celebrate.
    Keep taking your Remifemin, I think you'll be pleasantly encouraged by what you see over time. It is true that exercise, eating right and watching your stress level also have a big influence on how you feel...but I know the internal battle of the brain that occurs before every exercise session. Last week I was on the bike every nite...this week...not once yet. Life keeps happening...but I'm determined to make it more of a part of my life instead of less. Looking forward to more of your thoughts here on the blog!
    Michele

    Hi Colette,
    Welcome and it sounds like you know yourself very well...that's great! You also have a handle on doing your exercise and sticking with it...I admire that! I'm not quite there to the "stick with it" part...but I'm trying! Seems we're stuck with "body clocks" ...just as you mentioned...so we have to do the very best with ourselves.
    Blogging and taking our Remifemin will help keep us on track too.
    Looking forward to more of your thoughts!

    Hi Nonnameme,
    I still get a kick out of the explanation of your name! My exercising? I'm into the bike these days, mainly because I have it right in front of a Tv...I need to be distracted when I exercise (oh, look there's a chicken) because otherwise all I think about is..."I dont' want to be doing this"...so my exercise bike has these programs with this little coach that tells you to go faster or slower and there is a time on it...watching TV is really the key to my exercising until the weather gets nice enough to go outside and walk again. About to be a Grandma again? How lovely! Can't wait to hear the proud announcement! Ok everyone...let's keep exercising this week...one two three four...

    Hi Nonnameme,
    yes...keep taking your Remifemin! It's become such a part of my daily routine, meaning I take it when I'm getting ready in the morning and at bedtime. A good way to think about it is to remember when you're brushing your teeth two times a day....take your Remifemin!

    Hi Jo-Anne,
    Ok...I'll just say it. This "having more to love" just seems to be a part of our experience...it certainly has for me. I've decided to eat healthy, excercise the best I can...and let it go. If I have to, I buy bigger clothes...at least pants...so I can be comfortable while I'm trying to do the right thing. I think you have to concentrate on things that motivate you to greater health...but dismiss things that just serve to beat you up and make you feel bad about yourself. What's the point in that? That just makes you feel worse. Do what you can, and let it go. Look outside yourself. Smile at someone else. Make sure you don't make this a time that you focus so much on yourself, you miss "life" that is worth the living every day! Bottom line...do things that are good for health...then let it go...and let it be. Oh, and keep taking your Remifemin...hope that helps!
